Legislative session dates move. Chambers run past their target adjournment, governors call special sessions with little notice, and no two states keep the same calendar. If you work in government affairs, track bills for a client, or just need to know whether a capitol is active today, this page answers it in one glance instead of sending you to fifty separate legislature websites.

Common questions

How often are these session dates updated?

The refresh date for the data on this page is shown directly beneath the calendar. Session dates change when a chamber extends past its target adjournment, adjourns early, or a governor calls a special session, and we update the underlying record as those changes are confirmed.

Is this calendar free to use?

Yes. The session calendar is free and no login is required.

Which legislatures are included?

All 50 state legislatures, the District of Columbia Council, Puerto Rico, and the U.S. Congress.

What does "no regular session" mean?

Several state legislatures meet only in odd-numbered years. In an even-numbered year they hold no regular session, though the governor can still call a special session, which appears separately on the map and in the table.

Which states meet only every other year?

Montana, Nevada, North Dakota and Texas hold regular sessions only in odd-numbered years, so in an even-numbered year they show no regular session. Any of them can still be called into special session.

What is a special session?

A special session is a sitting convened outside the regular calendar, usually called by the governor, and in many states limited to the subjects named in the call. Special sessions are listed separately, so a state can show as adjourned for its regular session while still meeting in a special one.

What does "continuous session" mean?

The District of Columbia Council, Puerto Rico and the U.S. Congress work in multi-year terms rather than annual sessions that convene and adjourn, so they show as a continuous session rather than a date range.

Why do some states show a session that has already ended?

The calendar shows each legislature's most recent regular session for the current year, including the date it adjourned. A state marked adjourned has finished its regular session and is not scheduled to reconvene until its next one.

Why do session end dates change?

A chamber can extend past its target adjournment date or finish early, and either one changes when the session ends. Dates are corrected as actual adjournments are confirmed.

When do the 2027 legislative sessions begin?

Most 2027 sessions convene in January. California and Maine convene theirs in December 2026. The 2027 dates shown are scheduled rather than observed, so they can still move.

What is prefiling?

Prefiling is the window before a session opens when legislators can introduce bills for the coming session. Prefiling windows are not shown on this calendar yet.

How do I link to one state's dates?

Every state is directly linkable. Add the state name to the page address, for example /legislative-calendar#texas, and the calendar opens with that state selected.

Knowing the dates is the easy part.

USLege tracks every bill, hearing, and vote across all 50 states, Congress, and local government. Teams use it to follow the legislation that affects them, not just the calendar it moves on.
