Evan Schneider

Committee Director & Legislative Director, Senate Insurance Committee, Office of State Senator Jamaal Bailey, NYS Senate

For almost 30 years, Evan Schneider has worked in New York State government in a series of leadership roles built around a consistent throughline: expanding access to insurance and health coverage for everyday New Yorkers. He began his career in the New York State Assembly working for former Speaker Pro Tempore Ivan Lafayette, focusing on expanding access to early childhood education as well as making insurance more affordable. From there, he moved to the Senate, working for former Senator Neil Breslin and the Senate Democratic Conference as Senate Insurance Committee Director, where he continued that work expanding access to health, life, and property and casualty insurance.

Schneider went on to serve as an Assistant Deputy Superintendent at the New York State Department of Financial Services before returning to the Senate, where he currently works as Committee Director and Legislative Director for the current Chair of the Senate Insurance Committee, Senator Jamaal Bailey. That path — from Assembly staffer, to Senate committee director, to state insurance regulator, and back to the Senate — has given him a rare, full-circle view of how New York regulates and legislates on insurance.

Among his proudest accomplishments, Schneider counts legislation making it easier for New Yorkers to sign up as organ donors, work he continues alongside Donate Life New York State, and numerous laws requiring health insurance to cover more preventative measures for early cancer diagnosis. He lives in Wilton, New York, with his wife of almost 28 years, Shelby, and their four children, Tanner, Molly, Finn, and Jane.
