Early voting continues for the June 14 special election for CD34 open (Lean R) through June 10. Candidates for that special election were required to file pre-special election reports today (Thurs.) if they meet the reporting thresholds. These reports disclose contributions received and expenditures made between April 1 and May 25.
Mayra Flores (R) out-raised former Cameron Co. Comm. Dan Sanchez (D), $734K to $46K, and outspent him, $754K to $42K. They each have just over $100K on hand. Sanchez has a $100K loan balance. Flores has raised $1.1M for the race so far including funds raised for the March 1 primary election, which she won outright with 60% of the vote.
Runoff Canvass: Today (Thurs.) was the deadline for counties to canvass the May 24 runoff elections, which enables candidates to request recounts.
HD60 (Safe R): Mike Olcott (R) has requested a recount of his runoff loss to Rep. Glenn Rogers (R-Graford). Unofficial returns showed Rogers defeating Olcott by 752 votes. Canvassed results reduced the margin to 309 votes, largely due to a nearly 2,000-vote adjustment by Parker Co. It appears that the votes contained on seven machines’ hard drives were not initially included in the vote tabulation on Election Day.
“While I do not expect [sic] foul play, HD60 voters deserve to have full confidence that every legal vote was counted and the outcome was accurate,” Olcott said in a statement. “My hope is a recount will do just that.”

CD28 (Lean D): U.S. Rep. Henry Cuellar’s (D-Laredo) lead over Jessica Cisneros increased to 281 votes after the final canvasses. He was ahead by 177 votes on Election Day. As far as we can tell, she has not yet requested a recount.
