Campaign Finance and Candidate News for July 15

Campaign Finance Reports were due today (Monday) for federal, state and local (where required) officeholders and candidates. Federal officeholders and candidates filed July quarterly reports, which disclose contributions received and expenditures made between April 1 and June 30. We cover some notable results here, and our Crib Sheet has the latest numbers.

State and local (where required) officeholders and candidates filed July semiannual reports, which disclose contributions received and expenditures made between January 1 and June 30. Those will typically be made available online tomorrow (Tuesday), and we will update our Crib Sheets throughout the day.

GOV: The campaign of Gov. Greg Abbott (R) announced he raised $12.1M during the last two weeks of June, the most he has ever raised in the immediate aftermath of a legislative session. He raised $10.1M following the 2017 session and $8.3M in 2015 (Those fundraising periods were 12 days and 9 days long, respectively.). The campaign will report having $26.3M on hand, which is around $8.5M more than he had on hand at this comparable point in his first term (July 2015).

LTGOV: The campaign of Lt. Gov. Dan Patrick (R) announced he raised more than $3M during the last two weeks of June and has more than $11M on hand. He raised nearly $4M during the 12 days following the 2017 session.

Speaker PAC: House Speaker Dennis Bonnen (R-Angleton) established the Texas Leads PAC to assist the re-election bids of House Republicans. Bonnen’s campaign PAC contributed $3M to the new PAC.

HD32: Eric Holguin, the Democratic nominee for CD27 in 2018 (37%), announced he would challenge Rep. Todd Hunter (R-Corpus Christi).

HD114: Republican challenger Luisa del Rosal announced she raised more than $160K from more than 120 donors and had more than $150K on hand. Rep. John Turner’s (D-Dallas) campaign said he raised $35K and has $210K on hand.

CD22: Pearland council member Derrick Reed established a campaign committee for a potential challenge of U.S. Rep. Pete Olson (R-Sugar Land) as a Democrat.

Houston: Mayor Sylvester Turner’s campaign announced he raised $1.7M during the first half of the year and has $3.2M on hand. Challenger Bill King raised $685K and has $580K on hand.

Walmart has announced plans to eliminate synthetic dyes and over 30 other ingredients from its U.S. private brand food products such as Great Value, Marketside, Freshness Guaranteed, and Bettergoods, with a target completion date of January 2027, as outlined in a recent corporate statement.

The Details:

  • The initiative removes 11 synthetic dyes, such as Red No. 40 and Yellow No. 5, along with preservatives and artificial sweeteners, responding to customer demand for simpler ingredients while maintaining taste and value.
  • The move affects all Walmart U.S. food private brands, supporting a more transparent food system and aligning with evolving health-conscious trends.
  • Walmart President and CEO John Furner said, “Our customers want products with familiar ingredients, and we’re delivering on that promise.”
  • The transition will leverage natural alternatives, with the company collaborating with suppliers to meet the 2027 deadline.
